When “consistency” isn’t the point

We hear it all the time: Consistency matters.
Show up regularly. Keep your content flowing. Stay visible.
And while that’s true, consistency isn’t the only thing that matters – and it’s not the only measure of real impact.
In recent months, I’ve been reminded of that more than once. Between client projects, mentoring, training, and conferences, life got busy – and unpredictable.
Yet even with plenty to share, I often paused before hitting “publish.”
“Am I writing this because it’s relevant – or because I feel I should stay visible?”
Because visibility may open doors, but it’s not what sustains a meaningful professional practice — not in medical translation, not in medical writing, and not in any discipline where trust, accuracy, and clarity matter more than volume.
For me, writing isn’t a marketing exercise. It isn’t brand-building or lead generation. It’s a way to process ideas, contribute to collective learning, and strengthen how we all communicate.
That’s the kind of consistency worth keeping.
1. Redefine what “consistency” means
For those of us working in healthcare communication, consistency isn’t about frequency – it’s about reliability. Clients, readers, and patients depend on us to deliver clarity, precision, and care every time, not just regularly.
That kind of consistency isn’t measured by how often you publish. It’s built into every translation decision, every rewritten sentence, every moment you take to make sure something reads as intended.
Consistency of standards, not of schedule, is what sustains trust.
2. Show up with purpose, not pressure
Before sharing anything – a post, a resource, a newsletter – ask:
“Will this help someone understand better, work better, or decide better?”
If the answer is yes, write it. If not, wait.
There’s already enough noise in our field. Purposeful communication doesn’t need urgency – it needs clarity.
3. Protect time to think
Reflection is part of quality assurance. Pausing to process lessons learned isn’t procrastination – it’s what keeps us coherent and aligned with our values.
Taking time to think after a dense project or intense season isn’t a luxury. It’s how we grow – and how we keep meaning in our work.
4. Build credibility through intention
You don’t need to be always on. You need to be consistently intentional. That might mean one solid, useful article instead of three rushed posts.
It might mean turning down a project that compromises accuracy. Or simply taking time to rest before showing up again.
Credibility isn’t built through frequency; it’s built through care, thought, and time.
The work that endures isn’t the loudest or most frequent – it’s the one that stands up to scrutiny and serves its purpose clearly and responsibly.
Consistency builds habits.
Intention builds trust.
In medical communication, showing up matters – but showing up with intention, relevance, and clarity is what truly leaves a mark.
